- The Salvation Army started National Donut Day in 1938. This day honors the 'Donut Lady', a female Salvation Army volunteer who provided snacks to soldiers on the front lines during World War I to boost their morale.
- Due to limited resources, these snacks were fried seven at a time. The girls fried donuts on the soldiers' helmets.
- Even today, the Salvation Army plays an active role in supporting Donut Day. Salvation Army employees and volunteers often celebrate the holiday by delivering donuts and hosting events across the country.
