On March 21, 2006, Jack Dorsey posted a simple message: “Setting up my Twitter.”
Of course, this was the first post on the site, still best known as Twitter, after new owner Elon Musk renamed it X (the deal is still being argued in court). X then became part of Musk’s xAI, which itself became part of SpaceX.
Musk sparked new controversy by dramatically reducing the company’s workforce and integrating xAI’s chatbot, Grok. Grok calls himself “MechaHitler” and has been used to create a wide range of sexual deepfakes, including those of real women and children.
While According to one report, Threads recently overtook X in number of daily mobile users. (Both primarily text-based services are dwarfed by apps like Instagram and TikTok.)
Dorsey’s original tweet was later sold by the Twitter co-founder as an NFT for $2.9 million. However, it is known that its value plummeted as buyers were unable to resell it.
