Sports fans can now apply for a chance to attend the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Ticket prices start at $28 (£21).
Registration is now open for fans to enter a random ticket draw covering every event taking place at the Olympics. This window will remain open until mid-March.
If selected, fans will be notified by email and provided with a time to purchase tickets in April. One million of those tickets will be sold for $28, with about a third priced at less than $100 (£74.41).
“This game belongs to everyone,” LA 2028 President Casey Wasserman said Tuesday. “These games need to be affordable and inclusive.”
The announcement of lower ticket prices comes after ticket prices for the 2026 Men’s Soccer World Cup, which will also be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico, attracted public criticism.
Los Angeles officials told reporters Tuesday that affordability and accessibility are key to their ticketing plans and that they hope to allow sports fans from around the world to attend.
Ticket prices for the 2024 Paris Olympics started at $27.95 (£21).
Special early purchase windows will also be open for residents of the Los Angeles area and Oklahoma City, where some of the Olympics will be held.
2028 will be the first time the Olympics will be held in the United States since the 1996 Atlanta Games. Los Angeles has hosted the Olympics twice, in 1932 and 1984, and plans to host the Games using the infrastructure already in place.
Event organizers, along with hundreds of Olympic and Paralympic athletes, gathered at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for the Olympic Stadium Cauldron Lighting Ceremony ahead of the opening of ticket registration on Tuesday.
The Colosseum has hosted events in both previous LA Olympics, and will also co-host the opening ceremony with the track and field events in 2028.
Organizers of Tuesday’s event explained how ticketing works.
By registering using their name, email and zip code, fans will be entered into a random drawing for a ticket purchase slot in April. The earlier fans are given slots, the better their chances of securing tickets. This is because being given a time slot does not guarantee that the ticket will be available when that time slot opens.
The first set of tickets will be available from April 9th to 19th. Admission to the game’s opening and closing ceremonies is included in the ticket provided.
Most competitions are held in Los Angeles and southern California, but both canoeing and softball are held in Oklahoma.
LA28 CEO Allison Katz-Mayfield called the random ticket drawing process “the fairest way to ensure that the most people have access to tickets and that no one is advantaged or disadvantaged.”
“No matter when you get in, whether you’re the first or the last, your chances are the same,” she added.
Ticket registration is open until March 18, and there is no advantage to early registration.
