Journalists were awaiting the arrival of Health Minister Lorte Blema when the shooting began.

According to reports, two journalists and a police officer were shot dead.

“It felt like a really terrible movie,” Dieugo André, a photojournalist who witnessed the violence, told The Haitian Times.

“I have the blood of several injured reporters on my clothes.”

The attack was reportedly led by the Viv Ansanm gang.

“We offer our condolences to all the families of the victims, especially the Haitian National Police and the Association of Journalists,” Leslie Voltaire, chairman of the Haitian Presidential Transitional Council, said in a video statement.

“We assure them that this behavior will not continue without consequences.”

Despite the inauguration of a new transitional government last April and the deployment of international forces led by Kenyan police six months ago, the Haitian people continue to suffer from unbearable levels of gang violence.

Haiti has been rocked by a wave of gang violence since the assassination of then-President Jovenel Moïse in 2021.

About 85% of Port-au-Prince is still controlled by gangs.

The United Nations says that violence has killed up to 5,000 people in Haiti this year alone, putting the country on the verge of collapse.
