4 people found dead after rescue operation

A six-story building under renovation in the center of Madrid, the Spanish capital, partially collapsed, killing four people.

Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida said the bodies of the last two people reported missing were recovered Wednesday morning, about 15 hours after several floors of a building on Hilleras Street collapsed.

Local media reported that the victims were a 30-year-old Spanish woman who managed the project and three male workers aged 30 to 50 from Mali, Guinea and Ecuador. Another three people were injured.

A former office block was being converted into a hotel. Authorities have launched an investigation.

Spanish emergency services said Tuesday that several crews, including drones and sniffer dogs, had been deployed to search for people missing after the collapse.

Two of the bodies were recovered Tuesday night.

“All our love and support goes out to their families, friends and colleagues during this very difficult time,” Martinez-Almeida said in a post to X.

A construction worker told Reuters he was pumping concrete outside a building when he saw the building collapse and saw a large cloud of dust.

Despite the internal collapse, the building’s exterior remained intact.

According to developer Rehbilita’s website, the building was undergoing a “comprehensive” renovation to operate as a four-star hotel.
