This frozen margarita recipe has been my go-to frozen cocktail for years, even when I’m not celebrating Cinco de Mayo. It’s quick, refreshing, and requires only five simple ingredients, making it perfect for summer happy hours and backyard gatherings.

Unlike classic margarita Served on the rocks, frozen margaritas are mixed with ice cubes until they’re thick, smooth, and perfectly slushy. The result is a very refreshing cocktail that is cold, citrusy and easy to drink.

I love how this recipe lets fresh lime juice and tequila shine without relying on frozen margarita mix. A simple, classic cocktail and always a crowd favorite!

  • Only 5 ingredients: All you need is some simple pantry and bar staples.
  • Mix in 5 minutes: A high-speed blender does all the work with little to no prep work.
  • Easily expandable: It’s easy to make a larger batch for a party or celebration.
  • Fresh and classic flavors: Fresh lime juice, tequila, and orange liqueur create the perfect balance of tart, sweet, and citrus notes.

“One of the best frozen margarita recipes I’ve ever tried. I followed it exactly, except I had to add about 3 ounces of fresh lemon juice because I was a little stingy with the limes. I put the rest in a glass container and put it in the freezer for tomorrow and it turned out icy and squishy. Thank you for a great recipe!”

What you need

Here are the simple ingredients to make this easy frozen margarita recipe:

  • tequila: A good quality tequila that suits your taste will go well here. My favorite is Contigo. Blanco tequila (or silver tequila) has a smooth taste. Reposado tequila will add a more complex flavor. If you like mezcal, try this Spicy Mezcal Margarita.
  • orange liqueur: I typically use triple sec, but Cointreau or Grand Marnier are great choices. If you run out of orange liqueur, you can add some orange flavor by adding a drizzle of fresh orange juice.
  • fresh lime juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice makes a big difference in both flavor and brightness. The fresher the better!
  • agave nectar: The agave syrup mixes easily into the drink, keeping the recipe faithful to the classic margarita. Honey or not home made Sugar syrup Both are great substitutes, depending on what you have in your pantry.
  • ice: Ice is what gives frozen margaritas their characteristic thick, squishy texture. If you want a thicker consistency, add a little more.

How to Make Frozen Margarita Recipe in a Blender

This frozen margarita recipe is super simple. Here’s what I do:

  1. Place all ingredients in blender. Place tequila, orange liqueur, fresh lime juice, agave nectar, and ice in a high-speed blender.
  2. Blend until smooth. slushy. Blend on high until the margarita reaches a thick, frozen consistency. The ice should be thoroughly crushed and have a smooth, sipable texture.
  3. Adjust the texture as needed. If you want a thicker frozen margarita, add more ice and mix again. If the margarita is too thick, add a little lime juice to thin it out. Avoid adding more alcohol at this point. The balance is perfect!
  4. Serve immediately. Pour into a salt-rimmed margarita glass and garnish with a fresh lime wheel or wedge for the perfect finishing touch.

I love using my Vitamix for mixed drinks. It’s the perfect margarita blender because it’s powerful enough to crush ice to a thin consistency. I also use it in smoothies, soups, and nut butters!

A salted rim is my favorite way to finish a margarita. Because it balances out the tart lime flavor and adds a little texture to every sip. The key is to use the right amount of salt to complement the drink rather than overpower it. Here are some additional tips:

  • Use coarse salt. I recommend coarse sea salt because the large crystals stick to the glass and add the perfect saltiness. Margarita salt or kosher salt also work well.
  • Wet only the outer edges. Before adding salt, dip the rim of your glass in water, making sure to coat only the outer edges. This will prevent too much salt from mixing into your drink.
  • For a different experience, try Tajín. For a fun twist, I like to turn traditional salt into a tagine. Chili lime seasoning adds a bit of heat and citrus zest.

I love this frozen margarita recipe just as is, but it’s also an easy cocktail to customize with fresh fruit, spicy flavors, or fun variations on the classic lime version.

  • coconut: Coconut goes well with lime and tequila! For a creamy tropical frozen margarita, add frozen coconut chunks or a little coconut milk.
  • Jalapeño: For a spicy kick, mix in a few slices of fresh jalapeño. The heat goes especially well with the citrus notes of a margarita.
  • mango: Frozen mango chunks add a natural sweetness and tropical flavor that pairs perfectly with tequila and lime. look at mine Frozen Mango Margarita Check out the full recipe.
  • peach: Mixing fresh or frozen peaches into your margarita adds sweetness and summer flavor.
  • pineapple: try it Pineapple Margarita For a holiday-inspired twist. Frozen pineapple adds tropical sweetness and bright, juicy flavor.
  • raspberry: Tart raspberries add beautiful color and bright berry flavor to balance the sweetness of the cocktail.
  • strawberry: strawberry margarita It’s always a summer favorite. Frozen strawberries add a bit of tartness and a gorgeous red color to this classic cocktail.
  • watermelon: Watermelon Margarita Freezing them takes them to the next level of deliciousness. Frozen watermelon chunks make the cocktail even more refreshing.
