7 dead in Sri Lanka monsoon floods

At least seven people have died in Sri Lanka due to floods and landslides caused by monsoon rains, the Sri Lanka Disaster Management Center (DMC) said.

In Sitawaka, on the outskirts of the capital Colombo, three members of the same family died when their house flooded.

Electricity supply was cut in several areas and schools were ordered to remain closed on Monday.

Landslide warnings have been issued for nine regions.

DMC Director Pradeep Kodippili told the BBC's Sinhala Service that the risk of flooding was rapidly increasing in Colombo and other parts of the south.

“Many areas are reported to have received more than 400 mm of rain so far,” Mr Kodippili said. “The risk of minor flooding is increasing to the risk of major flooding.”

He urged Sri Lankans to pay attention to urgent announcements from the government and the DMC. DMC said that 20 out of 25 regions across the country were damaged by heavy rain.

The government said it had mobilized the military to provide relief to those affected.

Air Force spokesman Captain Dushan Wijesinghe told BBC Sinhala that three helicopters and a rescue team had already been deployed to assist with relief efforts.

Navy spokesperson Captain Gayan Wickramasuriya added that 10 Navy teams have been deployed and an additional 116 teams are ready to be deployed.

The military said it was providing food to the refugees.

Electricity and Energy Minister Sulakshana Jayawardena told BBC Sinhala that electricity supply had been cut in some areas.

“We have worked with the DMC to cut off power supply to the area,” Mr. Jayawardena said.

“We will review the situation after the floods subside and work to restore power.”
