A fire breaks out in a Moscow office building, trapping employees.

At least eight people have died in a fire at an office building near Moscow, state news agency Tass reported.

Regional governor Andrey Vorobyov said on social media that some people may still be trapped inside the burning building in Fryazino, about 25km northeast of the capital.

Online video shows thick smoke rising from the upper floors of the eight-story building. In some videos, people were also seen in the windows.

The building was once home to the Platan Research Institute and a defense contractor, according to state news agency Tass.

But the building has been privately owned since the 1990s, according to a statement sent to the agency by Russian-owned electronics company Ruselectronics.

Mr Vorobyov said eight emergency teams were working to rescue people still trapped in the building.

He added that a 34-year-old man was taken to hospital in serious condition, and two firefighters were also being treated for injuries sustained in the fire.

Emergency Ministry officials said more than 100 specialists and two helicopters were working to extinguish the fire.
