Colombian national football team's Ramon Jesurun arrested on assault charges

Colombian Football Federation president Ramon Jesurun and his son were arrested after a brawl at the Copa America final in Miami on Sunday.

According to Miami-Dade police, Ramon, 71, and Ramon Hamil, 43, were taken into custody on suspicion of assault on a public servant or employee.

The charges relate to a brawl on the pitch after Colombia lost 1-0 to Argentina in extra time.

Mr. Ramon and his son have not commented publicly on the matter.

Miami-Dade police said in a statement to the BBC that the incident happened shortly after a soccer match at Hard Rock Stadium in the southeastern US state.

Mr Ramon and his son were “walking towards the stadium entrance” when they “began screaming and becoming enraged” at one of the security guards who had been instructed by management to temporarily stop people from going any further, the report said.

Police said officers “placed an open palm” on Ramon's chest to try to get his son to return to him.

Mr. Ramon allegedly pushed the officer, and his son allegedly grabbed the officer by the neck, dragged him to the ground, punched him and kicked him in the head.

According to police, Ramon's son also grabbed and pushed a female official who was trying to help.

He added that two men also struck a security guard.

Mr. Ramon, his son and other family members are believed to have been trying to leave the stadium to attend the awards ceremony.
