Elon Musk's xAI's Grok AI model can now generate images on the X social network. Grok access is currently limited to X's Premium and Premium+ users.
The text below the sample images suggests that Grok is using Black Forest Labs' FLUX.1 to create these images.
The initial user-generated images suggest that Grok’s image-generating feature has no safeguards against the creation of political images. But with the US presidential election just around the corner, the company may be putting some restrictions on the feature to avoid regulatory oversight.
The social platform also gave premium users access to a beta version of the Grok 2 mini. Earlier this week, Musk said that xAI would soon release a beta version of the Grok 2.
A pill floating on X's Grok page says “Grok 2.0 is out now” and links to the release page. However, xAI's Grok 2.0 page still says “Coming soon. Please watch some cat videos while we prepare this page.” It's not clear.

Details on the current capabilities of Grok 2 are scarce. App researcher Nima Oji claims that Grok 2 is superior at code generation, writing, and news reporting. In particular, the first version of Grok made several mistakes while summarizing news.
If there are no restrictions on image generation, Grok could be a tool for creating misinformation on X and other platforms. It is also unclear whether Grok-based images contain metadata indicating that they were generated by AI.
We asked X how they plan to limit the creation of images for malicious purposes, and we will update the article when we hear back.
