Nvidia and Apple are said to be in talks to contribute to OpenAI’s next funding round, which could value the company behind ChatGPT at $100 billion.
The New York Times reports that former OpenAI investor Thrive Capital would lead the deal if it goes through, according to sources. (Bloomberg first reported Nvidia’s involvement, and the WSJ reported a story about Apple’s potential interest.) Microsoft, which already owns 49% of OpenAI, could also participate.
OpenAI needs capital. It said it had annual revenue of $3.4 billion earlier this year, but it expects to lose $5 billion by the end of the year as it ramps up AI training and staffing.
OpenAI has relationships with both companies, primarily running and training generative AI models on Nvidia GPUs. Apple, meanwhile, agreed to integrate ChatGPT into iOS earlier this year as part of Apple’s upcoming AI feature, Apple Intelligence.
