Moin Ali retirement: Nasser Hussain, Stuart Broad, Ricky Ponting react | Cricket News

Sky Sports Cricket's Nasser Hussain believes spin bowler Moin Ali is an “inspirational” cricketer both on and off the field, even after the former announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket.

The 37-year-old has completed a glittering 10-year international career in which he played 68 Test matches, 138 ODIs and 92 T20Is.

Moyn is the first British Asian to captain England, having led them in a T20I against Australia in 2020, and has more recently been an influential vice-captain to Jos Buttler.

Moyn was part of England's T20 World Cup squad this summer but was left out of the squad for the match against Australia starting on Wednesday, ending his international career.

For Hussein, Moyin's career will be remembered not just for the numerous accolades he received, but also for how important a figure he became to the community during that time.

“He is a very important and inspirational cricketer both on and off the cricket field,” Hussain said. Sky Sports.

“One of England's most influential multi-format cricketers. Ashes winner, World Cup 50-over winner, World Cup 20-over winner.

“He said he had a weird brain fade. He hit some good shots and some not-so-good shots.

“I think everyone who watched him play enjoyed it, but I think the people who played with him enjoyed it too.

“You can imagine his WhatsApp was abuzz this morning, he was a very popular player no matter which team he played for.

“He was an entertainer, but he was also a very significant figure off the pitch as a British Asian and British Muslim.

“Moin was a role model for his community. He said when he was young his parents wanted him to be a doctor, but he and Adil Rashid showed that there were many different paths for people in the community.”

Moeen Ali has confirmed his retirement from Test cricket after helping England draw 2-2 in the Ashes series last summer.

Broad: He's one of my favorite teammates.

Stuart Broad will go down as one of his “favourite” team-mates, having shown a strong will to win for England since their days together at Under-17 level.

Despite his illustrious career, Broad will be best remembered for his contributions to the team's locker room as a leader among the players.

Stuart Broad has paid tribute to former teammate Moeen Ali who announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket.

“He’s one of my favorite teammates,” Broad said.

“I first shared a dressing room with him during an U-17 match against Bangladesh U-19 and we became very close there.

“He just has a great nature. He's the kind of guy who can make a whole dressing room feel comfortable, and he's got a great sense of humour.

“He had a keen interest in paying England and winning cricket matches.

“For me, what's important is not the statistics or numbers of Moin Ali, but the contribution he made in the locker room and the little moments in the game when he put a big smile on his face.

“There was a moment when he won the Test match (at the Oval) with a hat-trick and watching him win the Test match on the big screen was an iconic moment in my memory.

“The sight of all the teammates around him congratulating him sums up what he means to everyone.”

Moeen Ali hit four consecutive runs in England's first innings on day two of the Fourth Ashes Test to reach 3,000 Test runs.

Ponting: He is an entertainer

Although Moeen was a spin bowler, he was also known to be very adept with the bat. Sky Sports Cricket Mark Boucher once spoke of his “Rolls-Royce” bat swing when he hit a cover drive at Headingley.

In fact, Australian legend Ricky Ponting will most likely remember such a thrilling moment for Moyne.

Moeen Ali was in great form for Chennai Super Kings, hitting three consecutive sixes, and was caught on the boundary line while attempting to score his fourth against Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League.

“I think the word I would have used would have been 'entertainer,'” Ponting said.

“I love watching him swing the bat and the way he moves the bat. Everybody talks about his swing and how much time he puts into it.

“The variety of formats is another issue. He has also been a dynamic T20, ODI international player.

“Any player who has played 68 Test matches would have had a very, very good career.

“I am sure he will be remembered for a long time all over the world.”
