Audible Experiments with New AI Feature for Personalized Audiobook Recommendations

Audible, the Amazon-owned audiobook service, continues to experiment with AI to improve audiobook search and provide personalized recommendations. Recent tests include AI-driven tags that analyze customer feedback to provide personalized suggestions based on individual preferences, and topic pages that recommend tags to help you find closely related topics.

According to TechCrunch, a company spokesperson said the experiment was only available to 50% of U.S. users on iOS and Android devices.

With the app’s new “tags” carousel, Audible’s AI analyzes customer reviews and provides a brief description of why other listeners enjoyed a particular audiobook. For example, you might have tags like “Heartwarming Romance” or “Relatable Storyline” at the top of the title. This lets you quickly get the gist of a book without having to read through a ton of reviews. Amazon uses similar generative AI technology on its e-commerce platform, including a tool that summarizes common product reviews and provides a brief snippet at the top of the page.

In addition to tags, the platform is also experimenting with AI-powered topic pages, which could help you discover relevant audiobooks you might not have discovered otherwise.

Audible uses AI to power several features, including an AI-based search service called “Maven,” an AI-curated audiobook collection, and AI-generated review summaries.

Audible recently hired some narrators to train AI to transcribe audiobooks. The platform is now following in the footsteps of competitors, including Apple, which introduced AI-based audio narration to some Apple Books last year.
