Uncapped batsman Nathan McSweeney is set to open for Australia in the first Test against India in Perth later this month.
South Australia captain Usman Khawaja will be top of the list after being given preference over former opener Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft and teenager Sam Konstas.
The 25-year-old is ranked mid-order in his state but recently scored 14 and 25 against Australia A in the six-wicket win against India A at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
McSweeney batted at number four against India A in Mackay a week ago, hitting an unbeaten 88 in the second innings after making 39 in the first innings.
The right-hander is averaging 97 and has 150 against South Australia in the Sheffield Shield this season.
Last year, he scored 762 runs in 10 games at an average of 40.10 with three tons and half-centuries in first-class competitions.
Speaking about McSweeney’s selection in the 13-man squad that also includes wicketkeeper-batsman Josh Inglis, Australia selector George Bailey said: In domestic cricket.
“His performances for South Australia and Australia A have worked in his favor and support our view that he is ready for his opportunity at Test level.”
Steve Smith started alongside Khawaja following David Warner’s retirement at the start of the year, but averaged 28.50 in eight innings against the West Indies and New Zealand, with a best of 91, and will return at number four against India.
After the Perth Test, Australia will play India in Adelaide (from December 6), Brisbane (from December 14), Melbourne (from December 26) and Sydney (from January 3).
