
“It is certain that the policies of the team now leading the White House will end the war sooner. This is their approach and their promise to their citizens,” Zelensky said in an interview with Ukrainian media outlet Suspilne.
He added that Ukraine “must do everything to ensure that this war ends through diplomatic means next year.”
Zelensky said the battlefield situation was difficult, with Russian troops advancing.
He said U.S. law allows him to meet with Trump only after his inauguration in January.
Trump and Zelensky have long had a tumultuous relationship. Trump was impeached in 2019 on charges that he pressured Zelensky to dig up damaging information about the Biden family.
Despite their differences over the years, Trump has maintained that he maintained a very good relationship with Zelensky.
When the two men met in New York in September, Trump said he “learned a lot” from the meeting and said he would “resolve the war very quickly.”
President Trump has not yet revealed how he will end the war.
His Democratic opponents have accused him of cozying up to Russian President Vladimir Putin and said his approach to war amounts to a surrender of Ukraine that puts all of Europe at risk.
But German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who spoke with Trump after his election, told German media that the next American leader has a “more nuanced” stance on the war than is generally thought.
Scholz said in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper that his call with Trump was “perhaps surprisingly, a very detailed and good conversation.”
Earlier this year the US House of Representatives approved a $61bn (£49bn) military aid package for Ukraine to fight Russian aggression.
