Romanian court invalidates results of first round of presidential election

Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Cioraku said the court’s annulment decision was “the only right decision.”

Constitutional Court judges said they had been asked to invalidate the results, citing an intelligence document released this week detailing alleged Russian influence on social media.

The court’s justices met Friday morning, despite announcing the night before that they would not discuss any new information about possible outside influence on the election until the second round of voting.

The law provides that if an election is invalidated, it must be reopened on the second Sunday after the day it was invalidated. This meant December 22nd.

However, the court decided to ask the government to restart the entire electoral process, namely the election campaign.
