Keely Hodgkinson won the 2024 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award with runner-up Luke Littler winning the Young SPOTY award.
Hodgkinson achieved athletics superstardom by winning 800m gold for Great Britain at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Littler, who took up the World Darts Championship last year as a 16-year-old, lost the final at Alexandra Palace, but his success has had a huge impact on the popularity of the sport.
Joe Root, who became England’s all-time Test scorer in October, came in third. Sarah Storey, Alex Yee and Jude Bellingham were the other finalists in the public vote.
Hodgkinson burst onto the world stage at the age of 19, winning an 800m silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
At the time, few people outside British athletics had heard of her, but those who knew she was destined for stardom.
She arrived on a golden evening in Paris in early August after winning two World Championship silver medals.
Hodgkinson’s success marks the fourth consecutive year that a woman has won the award, following Mary Earps in 2023, Beth Mead in 2022, and Emma Radukanu in 2021.
Littler had a breakthrough year in 2024, winning 10 titles including his first major ranking at the Grand Slam of Darts, a feat previously achieved only by Phil Taylor, Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright.
Littler’s remarkable rise has seen him become the face of the sport, with the likes of David Beckham sending him well-wishing messages as he progresses from world youth champion to a mainstay of the professional game.
Wigan Warriors named Team of the Year
Super League champions Wigan Warriors have been named Team of the Year after winning four trophies in a historic 2024.
The Warriors began the season by winning the World Club Challenge, defeating Australia’s triple NRL champions Penrith Panthers.
They then added the Challenge Cup and League Leaders’ Shield before beating Hull KR in the grand final at Old Trafford in October.
It is only the third time in the history of the award that a rugby league club has won it, with Wigan winning it in 1994 and St Helens winning it in 2006.
