The memorial event for Carter, a Democratic congressman who served as president from 1977 to 1981, is divided into three parts.
They will depart from his hometown of Plains, Georgia, then travel to Washington before returning to the southern state.
On Jan. 4, the motorcade will drive through Carter’s small hometown of Plains, stopping at his childhood home before heading to Atlanta for a public service at the Carter Presidential Center.
Carter’s remains are scheduled to be interred at the Presidential Library on January 5 and January 6.

He is scheduled to be flown to the nation’s capital on Jan. 7, where ceremonies will begin at the U.S. Navy Memorial and a horse-drawn procession will head to the U.S. Capitol.
For two days, he will lie in state in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol where the public can pay their respects.
His life will be commemorated at the Washington National Cathedral on January 9 with several former presidents in attendance.

Who will attend the funeral?
According to Biden, Biden will deliver a eulogy at Carter’s funeral in Washington, D.C., in March 2023 at the 39th president’s request.
Former presidents and first ladies typically attend the funerals of their predecessors, allowing people like First Lady Jill Biden and former President Barack Obama to attend. Hillary and Bill Clinton are also expected to attend.
President-elect Donald Trump said he would attend but did not say whether he had spoken with the Carter family.
Trump did not attend Rosalynn Carter’s funeral last year, but his wife, Melania, and other former first ladies did.
Trump attended Republican President George HW Bush’s Washington service. Five sitting presidents, including Carter, were in attendance that day.

President Biden announced through an executive order that the U.S. federal government will be closed on January 9, a national day of mourning.
Financial markets, including the New York Stock Exchange, will also be closed on this day.
American flags will be flown at half-staff on all federal buildings for 30 days.
