Chelsea have suffered a major blow in their bid to revive their faltering form after manager Enzo Maresca admitted centre-back Wesley Fofana could miss the rest of the season.
The 24-year-old has not played since being substituted in the second half of the 3-0 win over Aston Villa last month.
Maresca could not say whether the hamstring tear would require surgery, but it is nonetheless a devastating blow for a player who missed all of last season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
“Unfortunately he could be out for the season,” the coach said. “We don’t know exactly what the season will be like in its entirety, but it is clear that he may be out for part of the season.”
Fofana, who has formed an impressive partnership in central defense with Levi Colwill this season, was initially expected to be out within a few weeks.
The assessment was made just days after the win over Villa at Stamford Bridge on December 1, but further testing and analysis showed the France international will have to have his season significantly cut short once again due to injury.
He has made just 15 Premier League appearances in his first season since joining from Leicester for £75m in 2022-23, and his time at the King Power Stadium has also been hampered by fitness issues.
His defeat was compounded by the continued absence of Benoit Badiasil, who replaced Fofana against Villa and featured in the 4–3 win over Tottenham on 8 December but is not expected to be out until February.
“Whenever you ask me about Wes, I’ve said many times that I love Wes because he’s the kind of defender that gives you the opportunity to press, be aggressive and go one-on-one with (Oli) Watkins. ” Maresca said.
“We did the same thing when Wes got injured with Benoit. It’s one-on-one with (Dominic) Solanke and (both defenders) can handle it. It’s very difficult to find that kind of defender. Now there are two. Everyone is injured and we are trying to find another solution.
“Obviously Wes has suffered a tremendous loss.
“I don’t think an injury like this can be compared to other injuries. This one is completely different because it’s a muscle and he’s never had muscle problems before. He’s a little unlucky, but he’ll bounce back. Get back to how he was before he got injured.”
Maresca will also be without Romeo Rabia for Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace, and the midfielder’s absence so far has seen Chelsea drop from second to fourth in the table, but captain Reece James could start for the first time since November. There was.
“Football is about the players,” Maresca said. “We can have the best ideas, but if we don’t have the players, we struggle.
“Romeo is the best player for us and we are definitely a better team with him. We won the games without him and lost the games with him, but we are definitely better with him.”
“We are also a better team with Reece James. It is all about the players. I can give them the tools how to behave, but if they are not good enough we will not win.”
