
President Donald Trump says he is preparing for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The US president-elect did not give a timetable for when the meeting would take place.
“He wanted to meet and we are arranging to meet,” he said from his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
The Kremlin said talks were open on this but details had not yet been finalized.
Shortly after taking office on January 20, President Trump pledged to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine and expressed skepticism about U.S. military and financial support for Kiev.
“President Putin wants to meet,” he said Thursday.
“He’s said that publicly, we need to end that war. It’s a mess.”
President Trump has nominated former national security adviser and retired U.S. Army lieutenant general Keith Kellogg to be special envoy for Ukraine and Russia for his second administration.
Kellogg presented his ideas on how America could end the war. Research paper published by America First Policy InstitutePro-Trump people are thankful for April of last year.
He suggested that Ukraine should receive additional support from the United States only if it agrees to participate in peace talks with Moscow.
But the paper also suggested that the United States should continue its support for Ukraine if Moscow refuses to participate.
After Trump was elected in November, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that if Trump were elected, the war would “end sooner” than it would otherwise.
He said the two had a constructive conversation by phone, but did not say whether Trump had made any demands about possible talks with Russia.
