Just weeks after launching the refreshed “Juniper” Model Y in China and other Asia Pacific markets, Tesla has started taking orders in the Americas (US, Canada, Mexico, Chile) and Europe. The Launch Series is the only trim level currently available to order in the U.S., offering a “fully loaded” setup with special badging, fully autonomous (supervised) driver assistance, and Acceleration Boost for $59,990 before discounts and estimated savings.
The refreshed version of Tesla’s top-selling vehicle gets a new design for the front and rear lighting, an updated interior with an 8-inch touchscreen for the rear seats, acoustic glass treatment, a new sound system with more speakers and a retuned suspension. . There’s no mention of this, but a few pictures (embedded in the gallery below) make it look like the turn signal lever sticks out on the left side of the steering wheel, rather than dropping for the wheel buttons like the others. Tesla recently.
There’s also the same new front camera that Tesla says adds “improved visibility for Autopilot and indeed Smart Summon features.”
As with the previously announced market, deliveries are scheduled to begin in March. This is all similar to last year’s Model 3 update, promising better efficiency and performance with the addition of power-folding rear seats and a hands-free trunk that automatically unlocks when approached.
One difference between this launch and most Tesla launches we’ve seen is that the older version is still available to order, and the website is encouraging buyers to take advantage of discounted pricing while it’s still available. According to configurations available online, the price difference between the new and old models of a similarly equipped Long Range Dual Motor AWD Model Y was only about $4,000.
Of course, the current version is available out-of-the-box and you can choose additional options such as a performance package, additional colors or a seven-seat configuration. The new Model Y advertises a range of 320 miles without an EPA stamp, compared to the previous version’s 311 EPA estimate for similar models (until last year, the advertised range was 330 miles before Tesla suddenly lowered the range). The advertised 0-60mph time has also improved to 4.1 seconds instead of 4.8, but the permitted top speed has dropped from 135mph to 125mph, which probably won’t be much of an issue in a family hauler.
