In a post on social media, Trump thanked Waltz for his work and said it would be temporarily replaced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Waltz has been criticized for mistake of adding a reporter to a chat group discussed with sensitive military plans.
Former Congressman Florida is the first senior member of the administration who left the White House in Trump’s second term.
Trump said in an article about the truth society, “From the time of the battlefield, parliament, and the National Assembly, Mike Waltz worked hard to put the interests of our country first.
“I know he will do the same in his new role.”
Waltz posted a short statement on X with the president’s announcement screenshot.
“I am honored to continue my service to President Trump and our great country.”
According to the BBC’s US partner CBS News, Trump decided to name Waltz as UN ambassadors a few hours before the announcement on Thursday.
