The United States has reported that it plans to impose new travel restrictions on more than 25 African countries, including Senegal.
Earlier this month, the United States announced a ban on citizens in 12 countries, including seven in Africa. There was also a partial travel restriction on people in seven countries with three countries from Africa.
It is not clear why the Senegal athletes refused the visa because the US Embassy has not yet mentioned this issue yet.
Sonko said in a statement shared with social media on Thursday, “I ordered several members of the Senegal Women’s Basketball Team to simply cancel the first 10 -day preparation training for the Sports Department for the refusal to issue a visa.”
According to the report, five Senegal basketball players and 13 team members are already traveling to meet coaches with other squad members in the United States, and warm up for 2025 women Afro -Korea at the Ivory Coast next month.
But the visa application was not approved.
Senegal has one of Africa’s best women’s basketball teams. Afrobasket Tournament reaches four finals and boasts players in the best leagues in the United States, Europe and Egypt.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s YusSuf Tuggar Minister of Foreign Affairs said that the expanded travel ban could interfere with possible energy and rare earth minerals that African countries could provide to the United States.
The Trump administration must argue for national security issues and deal with high visas in some countries.
