Dispatch, Kenya: Abercrombie & Kent’s Charity Effect: Travel Weekly

I jumped when Abercrombie & Kent provided a weekly trip to the charity’s “opportunity to see under the hood.”

Eventually, I have dealt with a program that exchanges him (and many other tourist companies) for the last decade.

And my journalist was always skeptical about many efforts that traveled as a brand with social responsibility and sustainable things, but I knew that A & K was one of the founders of the movement 40 years ago and saw the results of the long -term promise.

What I didn’t expect was to get out of the leadership retreat of A & K Philanthropy from Olonana Lodge in Maasai Mara in Kenya. Inspired by A & K Philanthropy, as well as a wide range of programs that have developed around the world, as well as talented and passionate people who lead them.

But most importantly, it has had the effect of changing the life that a program that goes beyond one -time donation or simple supply can be provided. In addition, we have recently seen how much it is necessary due to the rapid cuts of financing the US International Development Agency (USAID).

For example, in the partakilat school near Maasai Mara National Reserve, Daniel Rokoi thanked A & K Philanthropy for all the help of water filtration and feeding programs. Then I asked A & K Philanthropy to build a restaurant that could also be used as a community center. Sproule did not promise, but later I later expressed it to me that A & K Philanthropy would be requested as a fund that could earn profits from the company’s next world’s personal journey.

In the Pusanki School in the same area, both the school and the civil servants expressed their gratitude in the dedication of the library, and then requested A & K Philanthropy for a science laboratory and dormitory, so the children do not need to walk with elephants and other wild animals.

SPROULE has compared the request with “Mission Creep”, which is generally negative in the world. But in A & K Philanthropy, it is a true signal of success that changes life in a long -term promise to convey aid and changing attitudes.

George Muchina, a local representative of the Ministry of Education, had a deeper influence on the dedication of the library. Here, George Muchina told the community members and students that they should “draw girls from school and stop marriage (for dowries).

This means that his grandparents and uncle Geofrey Kent, who founded A & K, would not have said publicly because Marett Taylor, chairman of A & K Travel Group Advisory BoD, was previously opposed to Mara.

Similarly, we have made more girls at school and gained sex education and awareness to both girls and boys.

Sproule said many of these programs started with a simple partnership for supplying students or supplying water filters. However, as the company leadership expands its promises and funds for A & K Philanthropy, three employees, including themselves, worked with the community from three employees, including themselves, and cooperated with the lobby government and hotel staff to adjust donations with the community to adjust the donation to adjust the donation by funding by funding. He has grown into 20 employees, including things.

What should the travel industry do to keep this success? Sproule said that public-private partnerships are key.

Although the desire of competitors to claim responsibility for the self and charity projects of institutions can interfere with the best intentions, Travel Elevates, a non -profit weapon of the signature Travel Network, is A & K in some projects, including building a school in Cambodia in recent years. He said he has a partner relationship with Philanthropy. And he is a promising but rare A & K Philanthropy and several other companies with Safari Camp in Maara.

“We have a rise in improving destination profiles and an increase in the upside of what the industry can do,” he said. “The Kenya Tourism Committee can amplify our message, and it will help everyone.”
