‘Incredibly lethal’: James Landale reports from the scene of deadly Russian attack

A Russian drone crashed into an apartment in eastern Kiev, killing six people and wounding dozens more as airstrikes continued across the Ukrainian capital.

As paramedics surveyed the rubble in the Lisovyi district, a Kiev resident named Vita described how a drone crashed through a building and exploded on the other side.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has stepped up attacks on Russia’s oil infrastructure, including a drone attack on one of Ukraine’s largest export terminals in Novorossiysk on the Black Sea coast.

A fire broke out at the Sheskharis refinery, damaging a ship and a block of apartments, officials said.

Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratiev said three crew members and one man were injured in the attack. The attack damaged a major oil depot and container terminal.

Mayor Andrei Kravchenko declared a state of emergency, and Reuters reported that oil exports had been halted.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine had launched long-range ‘Languine’ cruise missiles during an overnight attack on Russia.

The Kiev Fire Department said the drone destroyed several floors of an entire block of apartments.

Prime Minister Zelensky denounced Russia’s overnight attack as vicious and calculated, saying about 430 drones and 18 missiles were launched and dozens of high-rise buildings were damaged.

“This was a deliberately calculated attack intended to cause maximum harm to people and civilian infrastructure,” he said.

Two people were killed in a drone attack at a market in the southern city of Chornomorsk.

Kiev’s residential buildings were attacked “almost in all districts,” Timur Chkashenko, head of the city’s military administration, said on Telegram.

“It’s loud in Kiev,” he wrote, warning people to evacuate shortly after midnight local time on Thursday night.

The fire department near Lisovyi later said the drone had crashed into the seventh floor of a residential building. When the explosion occurred, all floors from the eighth to the fourth floor collapsed, a spokesperson told the BBC.

Vita said she saw four bodies being dragged out of an apartment a few doors away from her home. “I saw it with my own eyes.”

Two cranes hoisted rescue workers out of the block, and crews combed through the destroyed building, throwing broken sections of walls and shattered glass to the ground.

Falling debris and fire damaged several high-rise apartment buildings, a hospital, a school and an administrative building, according to emergency services.

At least two people were killed in a drone attack on a market in Chornomorsk, southern Ukraine.

He added that more than 40 people, including 14, were rescued after a fire broke out in a residential building. Another person was rescued after being pulled from under the rubble, they said.

Kiev’s energy infrastructure has suffered severe damage, leaving some buildings in the capital without heat, officials said.

Ukrainian lawmaker Lisa Yasko told the BBC that “a large-scale attack was carried out using drones, ballistic missiles and air defense.” “I often felt as if my bed was shaking with the window.”

Officials said medical teams were deployed to all fires, and Mayor Vitali Klitschko said nine people were being treated in hospital, one in a “very serious condition.”

Eyewitnesses described how a Russian drone exploded through an entire apartment building in Kiev.

The Ukrainian Air Force warned that drones and guided bombs were targeting Sumy and several other areas.

The overnight strike follows another Russian offensive less than a week ago that also damaged residential buildings and energy infrastructure, killing six people.

Russia has now said the attacks on energy targets, a familiar part of the war, were targeting Ukrainian forces, a claim Kiev has long denied.
