A simple four-ingredient formula for a 100% safe homemade deodorant that won’t sting or burn sensitive skin even after shaving.

Deodorant is one of the personal hygiene products that must be 100% safe. Every single ingredient must be non-toxic as it is used daily in close proximity to the lymph nodes and sensitive breast tissue in the armpits.
Unfortunately, many of the “safe” deodorant brands on the market are becoming less expensive over time. This trend appears to be gaining further momentum starting in 2020.
*One notable exception to the affordable natural deodorant trend is my friend Amy Perez’s company, Purefill. You may remember that Amy was the founder of Primal Pit Paste. Purefill is her new venture that maintains uncompromising product quality standards. Purefill just got better with the addition of reusable containers! If you prefer purchasing deodorant, we recommend supporting Purefill.
Ingredient Substitution
My personal favorite homemade deodorant formulation is one that uses magnesium hydroxide powder as the active ingredient instead of baking soda.
Magnesium hydroxide is slightly more expensive but is very gentle on sensitive skin.
Even if your skin is not particularly sensitive, baking soda preparations can burn if used immediately after shaving after sweating (the pH is too high).
Another substitution is to replace arrowroot powder with organic cornstarch. This alternative is a slightly less expensive option.
I prefer mango butter in my deodorant formulations because it is non-greasy. If you want, you can substitute shea butter or cocoa butter!
My favorite essential oils to use in homemade deodorant are vanilla, orange, vanilla orange (half and half), or lavender. For unscented products, you can also omit the optional essential oils.

guideline
Heat the mango butter and coconut oil in a small pan over low heat until melted and mix thoroughly.
Mix magnesium powder, arrowroot, and optional essential oils.
Spoon the mixture into a small container with a tight-fitting lid.
Once the mixture hardens at room temperature, apply a small amount to your armpits using your fingertips.
The mixture will remain stable in your bathroom cabinet for many months.
