Macclesfield striker Ethan McLeod has died after being involved in a car crash while returning home from a match, the club has confirmed.

The 21-year-old was involved in the accident on the M1 on Tuesday night while returning from a National League North match at Bedford Town.

McLeod came through the ranks at Wolves before leaving the club in the 2024/25 season. That season he played for Rushall and Stourbridge before joining Macclesfield.

A club statement read: “Ethan was an incredibly talented and respected member of our first-team squad and had his whole life ahead of him.

“But more importantly, Ethan’s infectious personality endeared him to everyone he came in contact with.

“Ethan effortlessly pushed us all to be the best we could be, both on and off the field, giving his best in everything he did.

“Ethan’s professionalism and unwavering work ethic were an inspiration to everyone, and his zest for life put a smile on all of our faces, even on the darkest days.

“The news of Ethan’s death has devastated our entire club and no words can convey the immense sadness and loss we feel at this time.

“It is undeniable that the deep psychological wounds caused by Ethan’s death will never heal, but one thing is certain: Ethan’s living legacy will never fade, no matter how much time passes.

“Ethan will forever live in our hearts and minds, and no matter what the future holds, his unique smile that captivated us all will never be forgotten.”

“We offer our deepest sympathies to Ethan’s family and friends at this very traumatic time and assure them that we will provide as much support as possible to those in need.

“May you rest in peace Ethan. You will forever be a Silk Man.”

McLeod’s former club Rushall said in their own statement: “We are completely devastated to learn of the tragic death of Ethan McLeod over the last 24 hours.

“Ethan is the man who made history for us last season when he scored a penalty against Peterborough Sports to take us to the first round of the FA Cup.

“His name will forever be etched into our club’s history books. We will remember Ethan in our home game against Leek Town on Saturday. Our thoughts are with all of Ethan’s friends and family and Macclesfield FC at this tragic time. May Ethan rest in peace.”
