Manchester United need to appoint an experienced manager who fits the club’s DNA, says Gary Neville. “Experiments must stop,” he argued.
that sky sports A pundit has urged senior figures at his former club to return to United’s core values as they search for a successor to sacked Ruben Amorim on Monday.
The Portuguese has had a disastrous record after deploying a back three system throughout his tenure.
Neville believes United’s failure since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 is because the club has looked to other managers with different philosophies rather than sticking to traditional principles.
“Louis van Gaal had his own philosophy. Jose Mourinho plays a certain style of football, so does David Moyes. Erik ten Haag is, again, a very different style of football, different from the style of football that Manchester United usually play.” Neville said: Sky Sports News.
“Ruben Amorim plays a very different style of football to what Manchester United typically expect.
“The experiment must be stopped.
“There is a very good video online of (United legend) Bobby Charlton talking about Manchester United as a football club. Adventurous and exciting football, playing with young players and entertaining the crowd. United have to take risks and be courageous when playing attacking football.
“Manchester United must appoint a manager who fits the DNA of the club. Ajax will not change for anyone, Barcelona will not change for anyone. I do not believe that Manchester United should change for anyone.
“That’s not to say these managers aren’t good coaches, but they all have different ideas, different styles of play, different philosophies and none of them fit the United way.
“The club now needs to find a manager who has experience and is willing to play fast, fun, aggressive and attacking football.”
Neville is optimistic that United’s squad can qualify for the Champions League through the Premier League again this season and expects interim manager Darren Fletcher to switch to a back four setup immediately.
But he warned it is difficult to predict how United’s season will progress if Fletcher is to remain in charge until the end of the campaign before a permanent appointment is made in the summer.
“Manchester United appointed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on a short-term deal and it went really well, which was a huge boost for the club. Then they appointed Ralph Rangnick on a short-term deal and it was a disaster, so we experienced both,” he said.
Carragher: Manchester United’s European expansion still realistic
Neville’s teammate despite mixed luck with Manchester United’s interim manager in the past sky sports Expert Jamie Carragher believes the team sit in sixth place and a Premier League-caliber manager should be able to steer them into European qualification.
Asked whether calls to remove Amorim could now backfire on United, Carragher said: Sky Sports News: “Actually, I don’t think it’s that dangerous.
“I think a good manager, a Premier League manager, should be able to get Manchester United closer to the Champions League places and compete.
“People will say that this is where Manchester United are now and that tells the story of the Premier League this season.
“I don’t think Manchester United have ever been convinced at any stage that things look really good under Amorim and that they are still in a healthy position in terms of league position.
“Things can change really quickly because the league is so tight, but there’s certainly enough talent in the team to have a real push for a European position.
“If you look at how bad Liverpool have been and how bad Chelsea have been, there could be a real opportunity for them to qualify for the Champions League.
“I don’t think that will happen, but I think Manchester United should have more than enough to secure a place in Europe.”
