Arsenal 2 – 3 Manchester United

Matheus Cunha scored a stunning 87th-minute winner to give Michael Carrick’s Manchester United a 3-2 win and reduce Arsenal’s lead at the top of the Premier League to four points.

Substitute Cunha curled a fine finish from 25 yards out just three minutes after Mikel Merino had pulled the lackluster hosts level from a Bukayo Saka corner.

Earlier, Arsenal squandered a lead when Martin Zubimendi’s poor pass put Bryan Mbeumo through on goal and Lisandro Martinez beat David Raya after converting Martin Odegaard’s cross into his own goal.

Arsenal struggled to regain their composure after Mbeumo’s leveler and Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Manchester City in Carrick’s first game last weekend gave them the lead when Patrick Dorgu fired a superb effort over the bar.

Mikel Arteta attempted to turn the tide of the game by making four substitutions before the hour mark, but Arsenal continued to flounder before finally restoring parity when Merino crossed the line for another set-piece goal.

At that point it looked like Arsenal would find a winner, but Cunha’s stunning effort silenced the Emirates Stadium when he found a corner to spark more wild Manchester United celebrations.

The win continued Carrick’s dream start in the dugout and served as a wake-up call for Arsenal, whose lead at the top of the Premier League has been reduced from seven to four points following wins over Manchester City and Aston Villa.

After goalless draws against Nottingham Forest and Liverpool, Arsenal are now winless in three Premier League games, while Manchester United remain in the hunt for a fourth-place finish in the Champions League.
