
Russia’s relentless attacks have crippled Ukraine’s energy system, and despite Moscow agreeing to halt attacks by February 1, the country’s power grid remains under further pressure.
The power outage comes amid a harsh winter, with temperatures expected to drop to minus 30C in the coming days.
Nevertheless, in a show of surprising resilience, some residents of Kiev, many of whom have no heat or electricity in their homes, decided to hold a party on the frozen Dnipro River.
“Despite everything, Ukrainians still stand strong,” the BBC’s Abdujalil Abdurasulov told locals who had gathered to send a message to the world.
