This was the moment Nazar Daletsky’s family learned that their relative, who had been thought to have died fighting as a Ukrainian soldier during the first year of the Russian invasion, was actually alive.
They were told he had died in September 2022 and months later they received a body believed to be his and buried it in their hometown of Lviv, western Ukraine.
Months ago, some of his fellow soldiers told his mother, Natalia, that they thought he was alive, and on Thursday he was released as part of an exchange of military and civilian prisoners between Ukraine and Russia.
