Koichi Nakano, an associate professor of political science at Jochi University, said there was initial dissatisfaction when snap elections were announced, but the Liberal Democratic Party appreciates the prime minister’s popularity. The party is expected to win far more seats than the 233 needed for a majority in the February 8 House of Representatives election, according to a recent Asahi Shimbun survey.
