Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi takes a gamble and votes in snap election

Takaichi’s enthusiasm, populist spending promises and nationalist rhetoric appear to have energized some voters. But critics, including business leaders, are skeptical that her pledge to boost spending can revive Japan’s sluggish economy. The country’s government debt is already one of the highest among developed countries. They also worry that her conservative stance on immigration will not help an aging nation already experiencing labor shortages.
