WM Phoenix Open: Chris Gotterup beats Hideki Matsuyama in playoff, Scottie Scheffler tied for third | golf news

Chris Gotterup won the Phoenix Open by defeating Hideki Matsuyama in a playoff.

Gotterup, who won in Hawaii earlier this year, shot a dazzling fourth-round 64, including five birdies in the final six holes, to move into contention at 16 under par in Arizona.

However, the tournament was won because Matsuyama putted on the 18th to win. But he did not succeed and soon fell into a watery grave in a spare hole.

This allowed Gotterup to sink a long putt for a birdie and seal the win in style.

“I never thought this would happen, especially after Friday and Saturday, but here we are,” Gotterup said after the win.

Gotterup couldn’t put her finger on where her purple patches came from and said, “Oh my God, I don’t know. I really don’t know. I’m having a really good time.”

“You make me cry every time. My girlfriend is here. She’s like, you won three times while I wasn’t here and she gets to see it and I know everyone at home is watching. It’s amazing.”

Scottie Scheffler also shot a final-round 64 to move into a tie for third for the lead, while England’s Matt Fitzpatrick had three birdies in his final five holes to finish the tournament three strokes behind in ninth place.

“We were put in a difficult position after the first round, but we were really solid for three days,” Scheffler said. “It was another really good round today. I may have missed a few shots from the looks of it, but overall I’m proud of my fight this week and I did a good job.

“I played pretty well,” he added. “There’s only one round where I wasn’t at my best. If you go home at 2 under on the first day, today is a little bit of a different story. Overall, I’m proud of the way I fought the last three days to give myself a chance.”
