Kuala Lumpur is one of my favorite cities in Southeast Asia. It’s a mix of different influences and cultures (Indian, Chinese, Malay and Western), has plenty of activities to do and is a foodie’s paradise that rivals nearby Bangkok.
Therefore, “KL” is a must-visit for anyone backpacking in the region.
Here is a list of the best hostels in Kuala Lumpur that will help you plan your trip and save money. If you don’t want to read the longer list below, here are the best for each category:

Want to know the details of each hostel? Here’s a breakdown of the best hostels in KL and why I love them.
1. Chinatown Hostel (provided by Mingle)

Located in the heart of Chinatown, this is a fun and sociable backpacker hostel where you can easily meet and mingle with other travellers. Chinatown has many cheap and delicious places to eat, making the area a great base (especially for foodies).
There is a communal kitchen and café, and staff organize a variety of activities to help you see the city and connect with people. The dorm beds have privacy curtains and the mattresses are comfortable. There are also lights and outlets to charge your items. It’s one of the most popular hostels in town.
Chinatown Hostel Overview:
- Convenient central location
- Female-only dormitory
- The social atmosphere makes it easy to meet people.
2. Penthouse on 34

This is one of the nicest hostels in KL. Located on the duplex of the penthouse of a high-rise building, you can enjoy great views. There’s also a rooftop area where you can take a yoga class or just hang out, and guests can enjoy an infinity pool overlooking the city from the 37th floor.
Staff also organize various events, including food tours. The dormitory beds are very thick and have curtains so you can get a good night’s sleep. There is also a bed light and outlet.
It’s one of the more expensive hostels, but I think you get a lot of value for your money. Although it’s a bit far from downtown, public transportation is a 3-minute walk away so you can get anywhere.
Penthouse on 34 Overview:
- gym and swimming pool
- magnificent view
- There are many events so it’s easy to socialize.
3. Birdnest Collective

This no-frills hostel is also located in Chinatown. All rooms have air conditioning and there is a nice rooftop café where you can hang out and relax. It’s not a very social place, but there’s plenty of space to relax.
The rooms are basic but comfortable, and the showers all have hot water and decent water pressure. It’s not a fancy hostel, but it’s one of the cheapest hostels in town, making it a great choice for travelers on a budget.
Birdnest Collective Overview:
- cheapest option
- rooftop cafe
- great location
4. Freedom Club Hostel

A short walk from most of the main attractions, this new boutique hostel is modern and stylish, with three communal areas to hang out in but has a quieter feel as the staff don’t host events. If you’re on a budget, there’s also a kitchen where you can cook your own meals. Free WiFi is also available.
Cozy pod-style beds feature thick mattresses, individual lights, and lockers to keep your belongings safe. The bathrooms are all clean, modern and have adequate shower water pressure.
Freedom Club Overview:
- cozy pod bed
- Kitchen where you can cook your own food
- Plenty of common spaces to hang out and relax
5. Space Hotel @ Chinatown

This is a space-themed capsule hotel and boutique hostel. Located in Chinatown, this room has an artsy, futuristic vibe with walls covered in space-themed murals and all beds in capsule pods. It’s not a social hostel as everyone has their own capsule, but there’s plenty to do and eat nearby (including Petaling Street Market).
The pods are comfortable and have all the lights, outlets, and AC so you can sleep well at night. If you need a basic place to relax and want a unique stay, this is the perfect choice!
Space Hotel Overview:
- artistic atmosphere
- private capsule
- shower
Kuala Lumpur is the heart of Malaysia and a must-visit for backpackers and foodies alike. However, while there are plenty of hostels in the city, not all hostels are created equal. Staying in accommodations on this list will make your visit to this vibrant capital a fun, safe and affordable experience.
