The Chanel Boy Bag is said to have been named after Coco Chanel’s lover Boy Capel, and Karl Lagerfeld took the shape of this bag inspired by the cartridge bag and Boy Capel’s hobby of hunting. While most Chanel bags have a timeless and elegant feel, this bag from Chanel’s Fall Winter 2011 collection is more sophisticated and masculine.
What sets the Chanel Boy Bag style apart from the Chanel Classic Flap Bag is the rectangular border around the flap, and the Boy’s clasp is an interlocking CC closure rather than a CC closure, but it has an almost Lego-like background.

Chanel boy bags come in a variety of materials, the most common being sheepskin and calfskin. If you want something a little more durable, look for calfskin. It also comes in a variety of colors, hardware colors, and sizes.

I tend to rent something when I know the color and/or style isn’t my personal aesthetic and won’t be used much, but it’s fun to try out. I like the Chanel Boy New Medium size as a daily bag, but personally, I think it is a bit too big and thick to use as an evening bag.
Some of the features I liked were the durable calf leather, the practical size for use as a day bag, and the versatility. The shoulder strap has a leather part that goes over your shoulder, making it more comfortable to carry than a chain one. The shoulder strap can be worn long over one shoulder, as a crossbody bag, or tied in two to make it shorter. You can also carry it using the top handle, which I often use.
Are Chanel boy bags still popular?
Chanel boy bags are still in style, but they’re not as popular or trendy as they were in their heyday. This is still one of Chanel’s classic styles and is perfect for those who prefer masculine, casual, chunky handbags. It offers a more natural cool girl feel than the more elegant and classic flap bag.

Old Medium Chanel Boy Flap: 25 x 15 x 9 (cm)/9.8 x 5.9 x 3.5 (inches). Fits comfortably in most everyday bags, including sunglasses, cell phones, and makeup bags.
new medium Chanel Boy Flap: 28 x 18 x 9(cm)/11 inches x 7 inches x 3.5 inches. It is large enough to be used as a daily bag. Card holders, keys, sunglasses cases, and even cosmetics fit perfectly in this size.
large in size Chanel Boy Flap: Measures approximately 11.75″ x 8.25″ x 3″. It’s not much bigger than our new medium and practical daybag.
Extra large Chanel boy bag: Size is approximately 15″ x 11.5″ x 3.75″. Big Daddy of Boy Bags. This product is for women who like to carry everything around.
