Zack Eckersley’s tries helped Wigan start the new Super League season with a 26-16 win at Castleford.

The Warriors trailed for most of the first half until efforts from Liam Marshall and Bevan French gave the 2025 Grand Final runners a slight advantage at the break.

Eckersley’s 43rd-minute try put Wigan firmly in control of proceedings before they added another try and Jake Wardle made the score safe with 13 minutes gone. Castleford rallied late but had too much to do.

After a surprising result at the weekend, with champions Hull KR being defeated, Wigan looked set to suffer the same fate when Liam Hood opened the scoring after 10 minutes.

It stayed 6-0 until the 34th minute when Marshall scored the Warriors’ first of five attempts.

After the conversion failed, the Frenchman produced a slick move to give Wigan a 10-6 lead at half-time.

Matt Peet’s men had the upper hand and Eckersley effectively wrapped up the points with his second goal after 62 minutes after opening his account three minutes into the second half.

Wardle’s try then followed, but the Tigers finished strongly after the Warriors’ Adam Keighran was sent to the sin-bin, with Mikaele Ravalawa and George Lawler able to add consolation efforts in the final 11 minutes.

Pete: We were fine when we left.

wigan head coach mat feet: “Defensively, I thought we did very well against a team that was definitely asking questions.

‘We made it difficult for ourselves’

castleford head coach Ryan Carr: “We made it too hard on ourselves. If we had hit the other moments right and not made the football game so difficult, the scoreline would have been a lot closer to the last 20.

“We were playing a good opponent at Wigan. They have been together for a long time, they are well trained and they know what they are doing.

“We knew we were in a fight, but we were definitely ready to fight. We just didn’t manage the game well at certain moments.”
