Mexico’s most wanted man and leader of the feared Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) drug cartel has died, Mexico’s Defense Ministry has confirmed.
The security operation and killings were heralded as a victory for both Mexico and the United States.
But violence broke out across Mexico as the CJNG retaliated by lighting vehicles on fire, building roadblocks and attacking security forces in eight states.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo urged people to remain “calm.”
