Bolton bid to host 2035 Ryder Cup as Tommy Fleetwood offers support for landmark tournament | golf news

Tommy Fleetwood has backed Bolton’s bid to host the Ryder Cup and said he would support the city in any way he could.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham confirmed on Wednesday that Bolton plans to bid for the hosting rights for golf’s iconic tournament in 2035.

This marks the first time the tournament has been held in England in over 30 years, with the last being held at The Belfry in Warwickshire in 2002.

“As a golfer, it will be extra special for the Ryder Cup to be held in the UK,” Southport’s Fleetwood said. “Plus it would be really cool to be doing this in the North West of England where I’m from.

“We have so much to offer, people have so much to offer, infrastructure has so much to offer. I think this is going to be amazing. I’m all for it and happy to support it as much as I can!

“The Ryder Cup is always the biggest sporting event in the world and hosting it in the North West of England will be a very special event that we will remember forever.”

Burnham has set out a commitment to invest up to £69.9m in a “significant package” of transport improvements to support the delivery of the new M61-M6 link road along with the Ryder Cup bus route.

“Culture and sport will be the key drivers for our good growth, which is why we are bidding to host the biggest ever Ryder Cup in Bolton in 2035,” Burnham said.

“We have had promising talks with organizers about hosting the tournament on Hulton Park’s world-class bespoke course, but this will only be possible with the right infrastructure in place.

“We are committed to making this happen. We are investing up to £70m in delivering transport packages to not only help spectators get to the venue but also deliver significant benefits to people living in surrounding areas.”

Burnham described the opportunity to deliver a “lasting legacy” and said a firm bid would be made next month.
