This is a guest post written by Raimee Iacofano of Raimeetravel.
Growing up in Michigan, Ludington was the best place to be. Every summer, my family would pack up the car, blast some classic rock music (with Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, and the occasional Lynyrd Skynyrd song) and head west to enjoy the beaches, climb the lighthouse, and eat the best Superman ice cream. It was a tradition for us every year since my grandparents called Ludington home.
As a child it felt like pure magic. I fell asleep to the sound of waves, chasing seagulls on the sand with my bare feet, and the sticky fingers of melted cones that somehow always ended up falling to my elbows. Ludington was not just a vacation spot for us, it was a special place where we made family memories!
But life happened. I grew up. Things have changed. I began traveling the world chasing new coastlines and eventually moved across the country to California. My summers have become less about beach towels and campfires on Lake Michigan and more about airports, new countries, and places on my bucket list.
Nonetheless, Ludington has always had a place in my heart. No matter how many cliffs I hiked in Ireland or how many temples I wandered through in Asia, part of me wanted to return. To see if it still has the same magic or if I’ve surpassed it.
Finally, this summer, I returned for the first time in over 10 years. and… wow. Ludington is now even more special. It’s charming, peaceful and full of things to do. If you’re sleeping in West Michigan (or Michigan in general), this is your official wake-up call.
I thought this would be a bit of a nostalgic trip, perhaps a quiet stroll down memory lane. Instead, Ludington completely surprised me with rooftop dinners, breweries with fire pits, great hiking trails, and tons of nearby adventures. Honestly, there is enough here to stay for a week. yet Leave with a list of things to do “next time.”
Here’s how I spent my time and everything I recommend if you’re planning a trip to Ludington.
Things to Do in Ludington

1. Beach trip and lighthouse trek
First stop: Stearns Park Beach I love that it’s completely free and a short walk from downtown. We prepared tons of snacks, people-watched, and even played a little shuffleboard (yes, there is a free shuffleboard court right next to the beach!). The sand is soft, has a laid-back vibe, and the water is endlessly deep and blue, making you forget you’re in the ocean.
If you wake up early or want to stay late, walk along the breakwater to Ludington North Breakwater Light. The lighthouse is very beautiful at both sunrise and sunset. Each lake creates a completely different atmosphere. Pro tip: Departing around 9 a.m., you’ll board the SS Badger, a historic coal-fired car ferry, across Lake Michigan to Wisconsin. The tradition is to say goodbye to passengers on board, and it feels like something straight out of small town America.
For something a little more adventurous, head to Ludington State Park. It’s often called the “crowning jewel” of Michigan’s state parks, and I’m just now getting it. The 25 miles of trails wind through forests, dunes, and beaches, stopping at both Lake Michigan and Lake Hamlin. highlights? Take a hike to Big Sable Point Lighthouse. It’s about two miles each way, but it’s a beautiful walk and incredibly rewarding. A striped lighthouse built in the 1800s stands against the waves. It’s the kind of place that makes you stop for a moment and think, “Wow, I can’t believe this is in Michigan.”
2. Museum time (because I secretly love history)
One of my favorite things about traveling is that I always stop at at least one museum wherever I go. In Ludington I found two gems:
- Historic White Pine Village: This is an open-air museum with more than 30 historic buildings, from a one-room schoolhouse to an old-fashioned courthouse. Walking around took me back to a simpler time and gave me a whole new appreciation for my Michigan roots.
- Ludington Harbor Maritime Museum: Perfect for anyone who loves Great Lakes history, lighthouses, or boats. It’s located on a former Coast Guard base and offers a fun mix of interactive exhibits and vintage charm.
Bonus: Both locations are very photogenic, so bring your camera.
3. Water adventures and nature exploration
If you enjoy the outdoors, Ludington is basically paradise. You can rent a kayak on Hamlin Lake for a peaceful paddle, or take a pontoon boat ride for more of a water party atmosphere. Paddleboarding is another fun option. It’s great exercise and you get a completely different perspective on the lake.
Don’t you go into the water? There are also mountain biking, disc golf, and a variety of hiking trails. Ludington really is the best of both worlds. A mix of small town charm and endless outdoor adventure.
Where to Eat and Drink in Ludington

To be honest, I had no idea Ludington’s food scene would be this good. But wow. I was really impressed, from the breakfast area to the brewery.
Breakfast and Casual Food
- cafe 106: It’s cozy, cute, and perfect for brunch. After a morning walk, an omelet hit the spot.
- house of taste: The most iconic ice cream shop in town. I grew up eating Superman here. But on this trip, I discovered carrot cake ice cream and let me tell you, it changed my life.
- The Sandbox at Stearns Beach: Serving gourmet sliders, seasoned fries, and ice cream right next to the water. Perfect beach and cold food!
dinner with a view
- sticks: Near a state park with a large brewpub, live music, and lawn games. It’s part restaurant, part entertainment hub.
- Blue Moon Bistro: Lovely rooftop patio with seasonal cuisine. This is where I had the best Reuben sandwich of my life. (And I don’t say that lightly).
- Jamesport Brewing Company & Ludington Bay Brewing: Two great breweries with outdoor patios – perfect for golden hour.
- The Perch on Hamlin Lake: A new location perched (literally) on a cliff overlooking a lake. Come for dinner or enjoy a cocktail on the downstairs terrace. Bonus: You can also get there by boat.
sweet + coffee
- Kilwins: Fudge + chocolate = heaven.
- Red Rooster Coffee: Cozy and friendly, this iced latte is perfect after a hot day.
- Humanity: If you’re a tea drinker or need a reset between activities, this place is perfect.
Where to stay in Ludington?

There is a vibe here for every type of traveler.
- camping: Ludington State Park has a beautiful campsite where you can see nature up close.
- downtown: Stay at a historic inn, hotel, or B&B with easy access to beaches and restaurants.
- lakeside: If you’re looking for something special, take a look at Hamlin Lake rentals. I stayed next time Sunset Bluff ResortAnd it was perfect.
We had a small yellow A-frame house that had a cozy cabin feel but had all the essentials. The best part? Private fire pit right next to the water. Every night we roasted s’mores, watched the cotton candy sunset, and drank local beer at Ludington Bay Brewing. It was the kind of place that instantly took your stress away and made you feel like you were where you belonged.
Best local shops in Ludington

When I travel, I always take time to browse the local shops. This is one of the best ways to get a feel for the city. In Ludington, we found a few gems along Ludington Avenue and South James Street.
- sexy nomad: My favorite! A beautifully curated store featuring vintage clothing, Moroccan jewelry, pottery and handmade treasures. I felt like I was entering the global market. But it was right here in Michigan.
- sister bees: Contains natural skin care made by women, beeswax, and Michigan honey. This is a place where great care is taken for gifts.
- Used and new books: Cozy, welcoming and full of great reads. I (obviously) chose a romance novel. The staff were very friendly and I realized why I always stop by an indie bookstore when I travel.
Returning to Ludington as an adult was like rereading a book from my childhood and discovering new magic between the lines. It felt grounding, nostalgic, and fresh all at the same time. There is something powerful about revisiting the places that shaped you and realizing that they are beautiful and sometimes better than you remembered.
If you’ve never been to West Michigan (or it’s been a while), put Ludington at the top of your list. It’s a small town with a big heart, stunning scenery, and a community that makes you feel at home.
Trust me! I’m already planning my next trip again. And maybe, just maybe, it will become a tradition again.
