The four astronauts on NASA’s Artemis II mission are the first humans to leave Earth’s orbit since 1972.
Commander Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen are now on a circular path around the far side of the moon and back again.
Their 10-day journey will take them 406,840 km (252,799 miles) above Earth, surpassing the previous record of 248,655 miles set by Apollo 13 in 1970.
The crew will not land on the moon on the current mission and will instead use it to prepare for a potential lunar landing by 2028.
