Ben Stokes has dismissed any suggestions that he and Brendon McCullum are not aligned, insisting differences of opinion are essential to a healthy and successful sporting relationship.
The relationship between England’s captain and coach came under forensic scrutiny following the crushing 4-1 defeat to the Ashes in Australia, during which their tour preparations and unyielding attacking philosophy came under heavy criticism.
Although there appeared to be a difference in messaging between coach and captain at times during the ill-fated series, Stokes insisted they largely remained on the same page ahead of England’s Test summer.
“When you’re in a leadership position with other people, it’s impossible if someone expects you to agree on everything all the time,” Stokes said.
“To me, that’s not a healthy sporting environment where everyone agrees with everyone or says ‘yes’ to the person above them. There needs to be discussion. There needs to be discussion, and eventually you both get to where you want to get to.
“Me and Brendon are similar, but different in other areas as well, but what we both want is to be as successful as possible.
“How we achieve success may be the same here and slightly different there, but these discussions will always keep us in the same place.
“We agree 95% of the time, but for the 5% where we have different views, we talk it out and get to where we want to go.
“It is impossible to agree on everything. To say we are not in agreement is a gross exaggeration.”
Stokes and McCollum are now tasked with getting England off the canvas in this summer’s home Test series against New Zealand and Pakistan.
Stokes expressed hope that their partnership will continue beyond the summer and until the end of 2027, at which point he hopes to have another opportunity for an Ashes redemption.
Stokes added: “I couldn’t imagine doing with anyone else what me and Brendon have been able to achieve in four years with the group.”
“We’re both very proud people about what we do. We’ve put a lot of our heart and soul into this. Brendon has certainly done it for four years now, and I hope we can still come out victorious together at the end of 2027.
“I’m very confident in me and Brendon’s ability to work together, because we’ve been working together for a long time, but we work together in slightly different ways.
“The most important thing for me and Brendon is our unity to win and make this team as good as it can be. That’s always been the case since we started. It might look a little different now that we’ve been together for four years.
“We still want to win everything and give the players the best opportunity to perform as well as possible.”
