A new coffee tradition with the heart of Italy

Today, April 21st, is a very special day. Because for the first time, we Global Moka Pot Day Worldwide.
This beautiful new tradition, an initiative promoted by Comitato italiano del caffè di Unione Italiana Food, officially launched this year, and the moment could not have been more perfect. This coincides with the World Day of Creativity and Innovation and the opening of Milan Design Week 2026, which I truly feel is something magical. It celebrates the deep connection between the moka pot and Italian creativity, design and everyday life.

Mocha’s story begins in 1933 with Alfonso Bialetti, a brilliant Italian engineer who forever changed the way we enjoy coffee at home. Inspired by pressure-based systems, he created a simple yet revolutionary stovetop coffee maker that would soon become a symbol of Italian culture.
From that moment on, the Moka pot spread into millions of homes. It has become a part of everyday life. The soft sound of bubbling in the morning, the rich aromas filling the kitchen, the quiet pause before the world begins to move. For many of us it is also very emotional, linked to family memories and shared moments.
And here’s another thing that makes mocha incredibly special… method We invite you to slow down.
Unlike espresso machines, which are fast, precise and almost instantaneous, mochas are a bit of a ritual. Just fill it with water, add your coffee, carefully screw it shut, and wait. You listen. The soft, familiar bubbling sound becomes part of the moment. It’s not just about making coffee. what’s there While that happens.
To us Italians, it’s almost romantic. It’s the quiet pause of the morning, the scent that fills the house, the unspoken “good morning” shared in the kitchen. Without rushing, without automation… It’s a personal matter.
Because with mocha, you’re not just making coffee. live that.
Today, there are many brands producing beautiful moka pots, each with their own unique style and personality. But I must admit that two names, Bialetti and Alessi, will always hold a special place in my heart.

Bialetti remains a timeless classic, original designs that feel at home with iconic silhouettes and unmistakable charm. Alessi, on the other hand, transforms Mocha into a work of art that is modern, elegant and perfect for those who love design as much as coffee.

Then comes one of my favorite moments… Choose one! Whether it’s for a gift or simply to treat myself, there’s always a fun sense of indecision. There are so many beautiful options and so many styles. It’s impossible not to fall in love with more than one style.

I have to confess… I love stopping by SME every time I’m in Italy. You can really find anything here… and more! I always go in “just to see.” And somehow you leave with more. lol! What makes it even more special is that they are also sponsoring Christmas decorations for my concert here in Italy.

Alessandro Zulianello, the manager in my hometown of Portogruaro, is a close friend and the whole team is always so friendly and helpful. So they are never surprised when I come in and take pictures and videos and end up shopping for all the travelers!
What is one of my favorite discoveries? A special Bialetti Mocha dedicated to the Alpini, a historic Italian mountain troop famous for their courage and iconic feathered hats. I loved it so much that it was the perfect gift for my wonderful fans and friends who joined me on my trip to Italy last year. It is a small traditional piece full of meaning.
And here’s a little secret we Italians will tell you. always Please wait… It’s not just the beans that are important in making great espresso, it’s also the water. And if you ask any Neapolitan, they will tell you this with absolute certainty! In fact, some people may even bring water from Naples to make coffee with mocha if they live in a city nearby… How serious it gets!
The final golden rule is never wash your mocha with soap. always. It may sound funny, but soap can change taste over time. Just rinse with water. Leave the rest to the coffee.
And speaking of creativity… One of the most creative uses for mocha I’ve seen was at a great restaurant in Nashville. location. Chef Riccardo Orfino from Castelfranco Veneto, very close to where I was born, serves delicious tiramisu in a moka pot!

And the fun part? Most people probably don’t even realize it’s a coffee maker. They just think it’s a very original large cup. lol! At least that’s what my friends thought when they took me there and said, “Wait until you see the cup that holds the tiramisu!”
So here we are, celebrating this new tradition together for the first time. This Global Mocha Day, take a moment to enjoy the ritual. Brew your coffee, inhale the familiar aromas, and remember that sometimes the simplest things are the most meaningful.
Because happiness… can come from really small pots.
Happy International Mocha Day!
love,
Giada
