Soldiers parachute into Tristan da Cunha to provide hantavirus support.

Members of the British military have parachuted into the remote Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha to help British nationals suspected of having hantavirus.

Two paratroopers jumped, along with an intensive care unit nurse and a specialist. Medical supplies were also delivered.

The patient left the MV Hondius, a cruise ship hit by an outbreak of the deadly virus, in mid-April for the overseas territory where he lives, Britain’s most remote enclave.

Captain George Lacey, who jumped with Colchester Garrison-based Pathfinders Platoon, said the high winds made the mission “particularly tricky”.

He said the team would remain on the island for a few days awaiting recovery because “sadly we cannot parachute back off the island.”
