Cruise ship hantavirus outbreak highlights ongoing food safety risks posed by rodents

The outbreak of a deadly hantavirus aboard the MV Hondius in the South Atlantic is focusing new attention on rodent contamination, a serious food safety risk.

As of May 12, the outbreak on board the ship has been linked to 11 illnesses, including nine laboratory-confirmed hantavirus infections, and three deaths, according to the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP).
