Fresh Palette: We totally embrace the rich, dark colors associated with the holidays, and come January, we want a fresh palette. Intuitively, I’d go for an ivory sweater, pale jacket, and tan shoes, but nothing feels fresher this time of year than white denim. The combination is obvious, but the simple act of swapping dark denim or black pants for white or ivory is so satisfying. Texture and weight are key factors to note when maintaining a winter-friendly look.
Stick to one color: Play around with multiple colors in one color and pair them with white. Contrast is clean and precise. A matching top and a tonal jacket are our favorite formulas that make you feel pulled together and elevated, but in reality requires no effort at all. The Uniqlo cashmere blend HEATTECH turtleneck top serves as the perfect base layer under a wool bomber jacket. When it comes to jackets, there are plenty of options in this category, but Khaite’s collared blouson silhouette stands out the most. The tactile suede finish of the shoes and bag provides warmth next to the TWP white denim.
reference: I am obsessed with several of the Uniqlo HEATTECH products. I’m always freezing and a cashmere blend top and these sweatpants are a game changer in the early mornings or whenever I feel cold. I have turtlenecks, long sleeve t-shirts, and sweatpants in every neutral color offered. Currently on sale.
Personalize it: A similar formula using a lighter palette with a few powerhouse products from my wardrobe. It starts with a camel jacket. Buy it well and keep it forever. There are many high-quality wool options at various price points to choose from. Once you find a silhouette that suits you, you’ll want to wear it all the time. I often prefer ‘S Max Mara’s short and boxy style, but if this style is available, I think a looser peacoat style would also be good. The impact of a lightweight tone bag should not be overlooked. I wear all black, denim on denim, and various gray colors, and the light bag makes each look stand out. Loro Piana’s small veil has a really nice shape. Create your own personality with accessories that are faithful to the basics. Add a stylish belt or standout jewelry (like this brooch!) to enhance the look, or dress it up with sneakers and a t-shirt. Leopard suede Mary Janes add punctuation. The Margo shoes above feel like slippers. Comfort is 10 points! On cold days, a turtleneck and boots (we love the Jamie Haller Lennon boots) win.
ANCHOR WITH BLACK: A thick cashmere knit works well when you don’t need the weight of a coat. My preference for quality and value is COS. For me, this is a year-round item. Summer fog along the coast ensures chilly mornings and cool nights. I like the light weight I can carry on my shoulders. This product from Frame is beautiful. I like to keep the rest of this look understated with carefully selected pieces. Dana Rebecca diamond earrings bring just the right amount of quiet sparkle, while the shiny belt and tortoiseshell sunglasses (I’ve had my eye on these for a while) read both current and classic. Black loafers with a warm wooden heel (by M. Gemi – another shoe that requires absolutely no break-in time) anchor the outfit.
MIX NEUTRALS: Based on natural denim, it harmonizes with various neutral colors. They don’t have to match, you can mix them together for a more interesting look. Above all else, a product has a weight of its own and should be considered a wardrobe staple for its utility and beauty. A reversible pearlescent padded vest underneath a reversible wool coat makes for a stylish complement to practical technical gear and layers. The shine and texture make the entire outfit interesting and balance the similar qualities seen in leather ruffled moccasin loafers. The dull tones of the wool coat lead to a second look, followed by a close study of the mock neck details and clean silhouette. Light bags make their presence felt here too. The Ingrid tote bag is truly beautiful.
From the Kitchen: Soup always tastes good in January. It’s filling, warm, and easy to make healthy without losing flavor. This week I made Italian Kale and Chicken Soup with a little twist to boost the protein. I replaced half the stock with chicken bone broth, added 2 chicken breasts, and used high-protein chickpea pasta. I wanted more color and nutrients, so I added a bag of Whole Foods Organic Mediterranean Blend frozen vegetables. delicious! I doubled it because I was afraid there would be extra money.
And just a quick follow-up to last week’s post about the disappointing results of a DEXA scan. Several readers have experienced measurable reversal of bone loss after using AlgaeCal Plus as a calcium supplement. Is there anyone else? I’m giving it a try and will see what happens with my next DEXA scan later this year.
