BBC Paris correspondent Hugh Schofield described people in the French capital as temperatures reached 34C (93.2F) on Tuesday, scrambling to find shade “as if it were mid-August”.
This is because the French Meteorological Agency said that temperatures in the ‘heat dome’ that has settled in Western Europe are 10 to 15 degrees Celsius higher than the average in May.
One tourist told the BBC he chose May to visit Paris to avoid summer.
‘We know that things can get really bad in June, July and August. ‘I thought it would be a little easier if we came up in May,’ said Brent, who was visiting from Australia.
