The BBC asked Americans to spell words used in the last three Scripps National Spelling Bee competitions.
Shrey Parikh, 14, won this year’s competition after spelling 32 words correctly in a 90-second writing round tiebreaker. He defeated 12-year-old Ishaan Gupta, who guessed 25 words correctly.
Parikh won the $52,000 (£39,000) prize for besting 247 spellers competing in the annual competition for nine to 15-year-olds.
