Manchester City completed their domestic double by beating Brighton 4-0 in the Women’s FA Cup final at Wembley.
Andree Jeglertz’s side have already won the WSL this season (ironically, after Brighton drew 1-1 with Arsenal) and are now looking to mirror the success of 2016, when they last won the FA Cup and league title.
Manchester City’s visit to Wembley will be Brighton’s first since making history by appearing in their first major final since losing to Chelsea in the same competition in 2022.
The Seagulls also started brightly, offering hope of causing an upset. Kiko Seike was the instigator, producing a run down the right flank and sending a stunning shot over the crossbar.
But once Man City went on the attack and Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw was able to get the ball, they never looked back. The WSL Golden Boot winner inevitably opened things up by nodding in Alex Greenwood’s cross.
Brighton wanted a VAR review after Chiamaka Nnadozie went down. However, the goalkeeper failed to control the ball and was beaten in the air by Shaw.
Next was Manchester City captain Greenwood’s opportunity to contribute. She sent a low free-kick that beat Nnadozie at the near post and the Seagulls’ stopper was clearly disappointed, missing out on another goal.
The second half was quieter, with Man City taking the lead. Shaw, Vivianne Miedema and Aoba Fujino combined for a resounding third, the latter coming home with a stunning effort.
Miedema capped off the second half of the game with a stunning header that Nnadozie couldn’t stop. Surprisingly, this is the first time the striker has won the FA Cup. This is after finishing second with Arsenal twice.
It caps off a brilliant debut season for Jeglertz, with Manchester City lifting the FA Cup for the first time since 2020.
