The USDA has confirmed the nation’s first case of the New World screwworm, a parasitic fly poised to wreak havoc on Texas’ $15 billion livestock industry.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed the infection by testing samples from La Pryor in Zavala County at the National Veterinary Laboratory in Ames, Louisiana, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said at a news conference. The infected animal is a 3-week-old calf, and there have been no other findings to date.
